Last Updated: Feb 14, 2024 by

If you’re using VMware to run a virtual machine on your Ubuntu Edgy Eft operating system, you may have noticed that the screen resolution is not optimal and some features may not be working properly. This is because you have not yet installed VMware Tools, which is a set of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machine. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process of installing VMware Tools on Ubuntu Edgy Eft.

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

  • A virtual machine running Ubuntu Edgy Eft on VMware
  • A stable internet connection
  • Root access to the virtual machine

Step 1: Update the System

The first step is to update the system to ensure that all packages are up to date. Open the terminal on your virtual machine and run the following command:

sudo apt-get update

This will update the package lists and ensure that you have the latest versions of all packages.

Step 2: Install Required Packages

Next, we need to install some packages that are necessary for the installation of VMware Tools. Run the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

This will install the necessary packages for building and compiling software on your system.

Step 3: Mount VMware Tools

In the VMware menu, go to “VM” and then “Install VMware Tools”. This will mount the VMware Tools ISO file on your virtual machine.

Step 4: Extract the VMware Tools Archive

In the terminal, navigate to the location where the VMware Tools ISO file is mounted. This is usually in the /media directory. Use the following command to extract the contents of the ISO file:

tar -xvf VMwareTools-*.tar.gz

Step 5: Install VMware Tools

Navigate to the extracted directory and run the script to start the installation process:

cd vmware-tools-distrib sudo ./

Follow the prompts and accept the default options to complete the installation.

Step 6: Reboot the Virtual Machine

Once the installation is complete, reboot your virtual machine for the changes to take effect.

Step 7: Verify the Installation

After the virtual machine has rebooted, log in and open the terminal. Run the following command to verify that VMware Tools is installed and running:

vmware-toolbox-cmd -v

If the installation was successful, you should see the version number of VMware Tools displayed.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed VMware Tools on your Ubuntu Edgy Eft virtual machine. This will improve the performance and functionality of your virtual machine. If you encounter any issues during the installation process, please refer to the official VMware documentation for troubleshooting steps.
