Installing a new operating system can be a daunting task, especially if you are not familiar with the process. However, with the right tools and steps, you can easily install Windows 7 on your computer. In this article, we will guide you through the process of installing Windows 7 using Rufus, a popular tool for creating bootable USB drives.

What is Rufus?

Rufus is a free and open-source utility that allows you to create bootable USB drives from ISO files. It is a lightweight and easy-to-use tool that is widely used for installing operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, and others. Rufus is compatible with Windows, Linux, and MacOS, making it a versatile tool for all users.

Step 1: Download Rufus and Windows 7 ISO file

The first step is to download Rufus and the Windows 7 ISO file. You can download Rufus from their official website and the Windows 7 ISO file from Microsoft’s website. Make sure to download the correct version of Windows 7 for your computer.

Step 2: Insert USB drive and open Rufus

Insert a USB drive with at least 4GB of storage into your computer. Open Rufus and select the USB drive from the drop-down menu under “Device”. Make sure to select the correct drive as Rufus will erase all data on the selected drive.

Step 3: Select Windows 7 ISO file

Under “Boot selection”, click on the “SELECT” button and navigate to the location where you downloaded the Windows 7 ISO file. Select the file and click “Open”.

Step 4: Configure Rufus settings

Before clicking on the “START” button, you can configure some settings in Rufus. Under “Partition scheme and target system type”, select “MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI”. Under “File system”, select “NTFS”. Leave the other settings as default.

Step 5: Start the installation process

Click on the “START” button to begin the installation process. Rufus will prompt you to confirm the erasing of the USB drive. Click “OK” to proceed. The process may take a few minutes, so be patient.

Step 6: Boot from USB drive

Once the process is complete, you can now boot your computer from the USB drive. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS settings by pressing the designated key (usually F2 or Delete) during startup. In the BIOS settings, change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive. Save the changes and exit the BIOS settings.

Step 7: Install Windows 7

Your computer will now boot from the USB drive and the Windows 7 installation process will begin. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. If your installation freezes at the Windows logo, restart your computer and try again. If the issue persists, you may need to change the installation path.

Step 8: Change installation path (optional)

If you want to change the installation path for Windows 7, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. When prompted to select the installation location, press Shift + F10 to open the command prompt.
  2. Type “diskpart” and press Enter.
  3. Type “list disk” and press Enter.
  4. Identify the disk number of your hard drive and type “select disk disk number” (e.g. select disk 0).
  5. Type “list partition” and press Enter.
  6. Identify the partition number of your hard drive and type “select partition partition number” (e.g. select partition 1).
  7. Type “format fs=ntfs quick” and press Enter.
  8. Type “exit” and press Enter.
  9. Close the command prompt and continue with the installation process.

By following these steps, you can successfully install Windows 7 using Rufus. If you encounter any issues, make sure to check your BIOS settings and the compatibility of your hardware with Windows 7. Happy installing!
