Last Updated: Feb 19, 2024 by

If you no longer use your Microsoft account or have multiple accounts that you want to consolidate, you may be wondering how to delete your Microsoft account. While it may seem like a daunting task, the process is actually quite simple. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to delete your Microsoft account.

Before You Begin

Before you delete your Microsoft account, there are a few things you should consider. First, make sure you have access to all the important information and files associated with your account. Once your account is deleted, you will no longer have access to these files. Additionally, if you have any active subscriptions or services linked to your account, you will need to cancel them before deleting your account.

Step 1: Sign in to Your Account

The first step to deleting your Microsoft account is to sign in to the account you want to delete. This can be done through any Microsoft service, such as Outlook, OneDrive, or Xbox. Once you are signed in, click on your profile picture or initials in the top right corner and select “My account” from the drop-down menu.

Step 2: Go to Security Settings

In the “My account” page, click on the “Security” tab on the left-hand side. This will take you to the security settings for your account.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity

To ensure the security of your account, Microsoft will ask you to verify your identity before allowing you to make any changes. This can be done through a phone number or email associated with your account. Follow the prompts to receive a verification code and enter it in the designated field.

Step 4: Click on “More Security Options”

Once your identity is verified, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on “More security options.”

Step 5: Select “Close My Account”

In the “More security options” page, scroll down to the bottom and click on “Close my account.” This will take you to the account closure page.

Step 6: Read the Important Information

Before proceeding with deleting your account, make sure to read the important information provided by Microsoft. This includes the consequences of deleting your account and the actions you need to take before closing your account.

Step 7: Click on “Next”

After reading the information, click on “Next” to proceed with the account deletion process.

Step 8: Check the Boxes and Click on “Mark Account for Closure”

In the next page, check the boxes to confirm that you have read and understood the information provided. Then, click on “Mark account for closure.”

Step 9: Enter Your Password and Click on “Next”

To finalize the account deletion process, enter your password and click on “Next.”

Step 10: Click on “Done”

Congratulations, you have successfully marked your Microsoft account for closure. Your account will be deleted after a 60-day waiting period. During this time, you can still cancel the account deletion process by signing in to your account and following the prompts. After 60 days, your account and all associated data will be permanently deleted.
